Christ Our Savior Catholic School

With your generous support, the students of Christ Our Savior Catholic School receive an excellent and Catholic education from a dedicated staff of caring veteran teachers, aides, and support staff. All students participate in daily religion class, daily prayers, weekly mass, seasonal prayer services, and Lenten Stations of the Cross. Students also participate in service oriented activities like writing letters and cards to the sick and homebound. They have raised money for worthy causes, like cancer research. The students are now collecting items for the Prayerfully Adopting “Support Our Troops” Supply Drive.

The Canned Food Drive helped collect thousands of food items for the needy in our communities. At the east campus, half of the food items went to the Our Lady of Knock food pantry and the other half went to the St. Victor Care Food Pantry. At the west campus, in collaboration with the St. Jude Holy Name Society, all items went to create over 140 Thanksgiving baskets. Any surplus items went to the St. Jude pantry.

Students also have opportunities to learn with hands-on field trips. Here are some of the field trips either recently taken or are slated for the near future: the Preschool and Kindergarten went to Strack and VanTil in Munster for a health and nutrition tour. Along with the first and second graders, they will also see the play Pinnochio in mid-January at South Suburban College. The fourth, fifth, and sixth graders will see A Christmas Carol at Governors State University later this month. The seventh and eighth graders will see Anne Frank in early February. The seventh graders attended a Step-Up day at Marian Catholic High School to see the school in operation and answer any questions they might have.

The First Week of Advent

We pray: O God, in these weeks before Your Son’s coming, help us to prepare ourselves by remembering the things He taught us. This Advent we want to grow stronger in love and closer to You. Amen.

Our First Week of Advent prayer service will be celebrated on Monday, December 3 at 12:40 P.M. in church. Please join us in preparing for the coming of Jesus.

Second quarter Progress Reports were sent home with the students today.  If you have any questions about the report, please contact your child’s teacher.

Due to the Christmas Holidays, tuition envelopes are being sent home today. Next tuition payment is due by December 15.

Boys who are practicing for basketball should not be dropped off at the gym unless there is a coach to supervise them. Boys are being dropped off too early for practice (as early as 30 minutes before the scheduled practice) and left in the gym without a coach. Parents, please check that a coach is in the gym to supervise your son.

The Knights of Columbus is accepting item donations to fill Christmas boxes for the men and women serving in the military including those on our Prayerfully Adopting lists from the east and west campuses. On Friday, November 30 the students will have a “donated items” Dress-Down Day. To dress down, each student is asked to bring in one or two items from the following list. These items will be given to the Knights to put in the Christmas boxes for the military:
Hand sanitizer, sunscreen, bug spray, baby wipes, lip balm, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotion, soap, other personal care items in plastic containers, Gatorade powder, beef jerky, other nonperishable snacks, magazines, paperback books, games, puzzle books, playing cards, religious items, stationary, stamps, phone cards, batteries, sunglasses, disposable cameras, pens and pencils.

Second grade students who are members of St. Jude parish will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Saturday, December 1at 11:30 A.M. Please keep these young children in your prayers.

The Board of Specified Jurisdiction meeting will take place on Wednesday, December 5 at 7 P.M. in McMahon Hall at the west campus.

The Grand Prize Drawing in the Winter Moneyland Raffle will be Thursday, December 13 after the Christmas Program at the east campus. If you need additional tickets, please call or stop in the office to receive them.

Congratulations to the 4-6 grade Girls’ Basketball team! The team took Second Place in the St. Florian League and won First Place in the St. Florian Tournament. Each of the girls was awarded recognition for each accomplishment. Great job, team members: Dejah Powell, Demi Powell, Alanah Rosas, Salma Espinoza, Sierra Jones, Christina Signorelli, Cheterra McCray, Tori Keilman, Karina Garcia, and Chelsea Payton. A congratulations goes out to the coaches: Mr. Carr, Mrs. Espinoza, and Mr. Rosas. Congratulations also to Dejah Powell who won an award for the Best Free Throw in the league.
Four of the girls were also invited to play in the St. Florian All-Star game held last night: Dejah Powell, Alanah Rosas, Demi Powell, and Salma Espinoza.  What a great job!

Devin Hester is a wonderful example of how a single person can make a profound difference on an entire group.

Progress reports went home today. Please sign them and return them immediately. They will be returned to you. Your signature on the form is a way to maintain open lines of communication. 

Tuition envelopes are going home today. Tuition is due on December 15.

The Christmas Concert will take place on December 11 at 7:00 P.M. in the gym for grades K, 1, 3, 5, and 7 along with the Band Concert. We hope that all families can come and enjoy this enchanting evening of Christmas music.

Absence Note: Please call the school office by 9:00 A.M. to report your child’s absence. You need to send a written note when your child returns to school explaining the absence. This is detailed on page 16 of the Parent Handbook. These policies are in place to help keep your children safe. The school office number is (708) 333-8173.

Please label all clothing items (sweaters, sweatshirts) along with lunch bags and any other item that can be left behind. We have a growing collection in the Lost and Found. These are expensive items and we want your children to have them.

Raffle News:
ÿ The Winter Moneyland Raffle is under way. Should you need additional tickets, please call the office to have them sent home. The drawing date is approaching fast, so be sure to sell tickets before the December 13 drawing at the east campus.

Community Service News:
Our Prayerfully Adopting Program is working with the Knights of Columbus to sponsor a drive to help support our men and women in the military. Many items that are needed can be purchased at your local dollar store. The list includes: hand sanitizer, bug spray, baby wipes, toothpaste/toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, Gatorade powder, beef jerky, games, puzzle books, playing cards, religious items, stamps, phone cards, batteries, sunglasses, disposable cameras, pens and pencils, lip balm, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, sunscreen (SPF 30+), and  paperback books. There will be a box in the office clearly marked for you to deposit items. The drive ends December 10.

The Canned Food Drive winning class is Mrs. Gifford’s class. They will receive a pizza party in February for bringing in the most cans. The runner up is Mrs. Petner’s class. They will receive a treat from the Student Council.

Cub Scout Troop #939 is sponsoring a Winter Clothing Drive from November 27 – December 9. New or used items in good condition are welcome, such as winter coats, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, sweaters, pants, and boots. Please drop items in the container in the school lobby.

Athletic News:
The Christ Our Savior West Athletic Board and the Girls and Boys Basketball teams are sponsoring the 2nd Annual Candlelight Bowl Fundraiser on Saturday, December 8 at Dolton Bowl on Sibley Blvd. from 11:00 P.M. – 2:00 A.M.  Kids are welcome. Tickets are $25.00 each and include food, 3 hours of bowling, shoe rental and loads of fun. Tickets will be available through players and Board members. We are in the process of replacing the bleachers in the gym, and funds raised will contribute to the realization of this goal. Please come out and support this event. Grades 7 and 8 have been very busy!

For the past month, the eighth graders at the east campus have been working on a research project called “The Civil War News.” Given various headlines such as “Medical Treatment in the Field” and “New Weaponry,” students wrote articles as if they were reporters living during the years 1861-1865. The project was then finished with students using Microsoft Publisher. This independent study project gave them a sampling of what high school work will entail.

The seventh and eighth graders are participating in the local Knights of Columbus essay contest.  The theme for this year is “Should Uniforms Be Allowed/Prohibited in Public School?” The classes brainstormed ideas for both positions and then chose the best three arguments to support each stance. Then they chose their position and began to write each part of the essay. The final version will be due in December.

Seventh and eighth graders also took part in the V.F.W. Essay Contest. Their theme was “Why I Am an American Patriot.” Essays were completed by the October 31 deadline and submitted to the V.F.W.

Seventh grade students performed various skits for their second grade “buddies.” The skits all focused on the theme of “Manners” which was the first highlighted theme of our Positive Opportunity Program (P.O.P.).

The staff wishes all of our families a very Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving. Let us give thanks to God for all His gifts: For our daily food and drink, for minds to think, for health and strength to work, for families and friends, we thank you Lord.

The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic organization, is accepting item donations to fill Christmas boxes for the men and women serving in the military including those on our Prayerfully Adopting from the east and west campus. Serious concerns about reading material: A series of books called “The Gossip Girls” appears to be popular with the upper grade students. These books contain objectionable language, sexual content and innuendo, and promiscuity. None of these books are allowed in our school. If one is found in a student’s possession, it will be confiscated and returned only to the parent. Please monitor carefully what your child is reading. Some books look harmless on the cover, but the inside material is not suited for elementary-age students.

The first $100 early bird winners of our Winter Moneyland Raffle have been drawn. Congratulations to B. Daviduke (east) and W. Truby (west). If you need additional tickets, please call or stop in the office to receive them. The drawing will take place on December 13 at the East campus after the Christmas Show.

The Student Council would like to say “Thank You” to all who sent in food for the Thanksgiving food drive. We have received a thank you card from St. Victor’s Parish for the donations given to the food depository. Thank you, too, to the Student Council members who made the man signs publicizing the food drive.

Reminder: No one is allowed to return to classrooms or lockers after dismissal (this includes Extended Day Care students/parents.) This regulation is a security measure. Students are given ample time to organize their books and belongings before dismissal.

The staff and students wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! We thank you, the Pastors and parishioners of our founding parishes, for your continued support of our school community, and we ask God to bless you and your family as you celebrate in thanksgiving to Him for His bountiful goodness.

Third grade students finished their study of the Rosary by making dioramas representing the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary. The students will present a program to the first and second graders describing the Mysteries, and how they made their dioramas. The dioramas are displayed in the hallway for all to see. Please visit us to see the students’ work.

Congratulations to our students who are Confirmandi of St. Andrew’s Parish. They will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Kane on Sunday, November 18 at 3 P.M. Please keep all of our Confirmandi in your prayers.

Our eighth graders have taken their first steps in preparing for graduation. They took their graduation pictures and were fitted for their caps and gowns this past week. Having listened to presentations from local high school representatives, the students’ next step will be to choose a high school and take the high school entrance exam in January.

Tickets for our school’s Winter Moneyland Raffle are priced at $10 each. The Grand Prize Drawing will be held on December 13. With every 500 tickets sold, there will be a drawing for a $100 early bird prize from each campus. Tickets pulled for early bird drawings will remain in the Grand Raffle. Please be sure to return the Parent Survey you received on Conference day to the office by Monday, November 19 if you chose to complete it at home. Thank you. If you were not able to keep your appointment for conferences, the survey was sent home to you by way of your child’s book bag.

Congratulations and Happy 50th Anniversary to two of our founding parishes, St. Jude and Our Lady of Knock! We ask God to bless the Pastors, staff, and parishioners of those parishes as they use their time, talent, and treasure to continue their parish mission for the next fifty years.

We have kicked off our second major fundraiser of the school year, the Winter Money Raffle. Tickets are priced at $10 each. The Grand Prize Drawing will be held on December 13, just in time to shop for Christmas gifts, at the east campus after the Christmas program. First prize is $2500, second prize is $1500, and third prize is $1000. With every 500 tickets sold, there will be a drawing for a $100 early bird prize from each campus. Tickets pulled for early bird drawings will remain in the Grand Raffle. As directed by the Office of Catholic Schools, we continue to develop our school Board of Specified Jurisdiction. Members have selected committees that they are interested in chairing and will seek to ask others outside of the Board to help them with these committees. The Board members also continue to receive professional development for the positions they currently hold or will hold in the future on the Board.  We thank these men and women for their service and commitment to this mission: Fr. During this month of Thanksgiving we pray: People of God, let us praise the Lord; with one voice we give thanks and praise to God!

Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for today. If circumstances have changed, and you cannot keep your appointment, please call the office (862-4143) so we can inform the teacher. At conferences you will receive a school ID card and the Smile Safe Kids card for your child/children.

During today’s conferences, each family will receive a parent survey which is part of our School Improvement Process. We are asking that you please complete the survey before you leave if at all possible. There will be tables and chairs set up by the office where you can complete the survey; a box will be placed on the table into which you can place the completed survey. If you prefer to take it home, please be sure to return it to the office by Monday, November 19. Thank you.

There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, November 9 in honor of Veteran’s Day.

We are sending home today an informational flyer regarding infectious diseases from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Please take time to read this important information.

East campus students who have earned their October Incentive Day will dress-down on Monday, November 12. Rules for dress-down are detailed in the Parent-Student Handbook on the website.

Preschool and Kindergarten will be taking a “nutritional awareness” field trip to Strack and VanTil’s on Tuesday, November 13.

Awards for the first quarter will be given out on Wednesday, November 14 in the gym at 2:30 P.M. This is a date/time change from last week’s information.

Graduation pictures and measurements for caps and gowns for the 8th grade will be done on Wednesday, November 14. An informational letter is being sent home today regarding proper dress attire for the pictures.

Absentee and retakes of school pictures for grades PS-7 will be done on Thursday, November 15. Those who were absent are to be sure they have their money/order forms with them.

Tuition envelopes were sent home last Thursday. The next tuition payment is due Thursday, November 15.

The Student Council is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Food Drive. Students are asked to bring in non-perishable food items from November 5-13. Food items will be given to the Calumet City Resource Center and parish Food Pantries.

Congratulations to three of our students who will be advancing to The Times District Spelling Bee on February 23, 2008: Gr. 6-Julie Whitehair; Gr. 7-Antonia Roberts; Gr. 8-Jorian Robinson. We wish you the best of luck as you prepare for the Bee.
